Malaria kills nearly one-half million people a year and over 1 billion people are at risk of becoming infected by the parasite. Plasmodial infections are difficult to treat for a myriad of reasons, but the ability of the organism to remain latent in hosts and the complex life cycles greatly contributed to the difficulty in treat malaria.

Runar Reve, a former KAUST Visiting Student Research Program (VSRP) student, recently received the International Society for Computational Biology’s (ISCB) Bio-Ontologies COSI – Best Talk Award at the 28th Conference on Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology (ISMB) 2020.

​Runar Reve is from Klepp, Rogaland, in Norway. He is currently in his industry year as a visiting student for his bachelor's degree in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics at Aberystwyth University in Wales and will obtain his degree by the summer of 2021. He is currently working with Professor Robert Hoehndorf Bio-Ontology Research Group (BORG) on genome-wide association study (GWAS) to find variants, or sets of variants, in genomes that can result in genetic disease.​ Research Interests Genome-Wide Association Studies​.
